AN INTRODUCTION TO BIRDHOUSES

Birdhouses, nest boxes and other artificial nest sites have become an important means of protecting birds in recent years. Due to pressures from industry, urban development and loss of traditional habitat, some birds are finding it harder to find a place to nest. Most species can still find enough nesting sites in their natural habitat, but in towns and cities, with many birds being attracted into gardens, there is a lot of competition for the few nesting sites that are available.

By giving them a helping hand you could be rewarded by having birds nest in your purpose-built birdhouse – if not for breeding then as a night-time roost. The environmentally sound practice of encouraging a diversity of birds into our gardens has the added benefit of controlling insect proliferation and various other pests.

Don’t be disappointed if the box isn’t used immediately after putting it up. A lot depends on where it is sited and on your surroundings. Perseverance is essential as local bird populations learn the nest box habit

DIFFERENT BOXES FOR DIFFERENT BIRDS

Birdhouse and nest box design varies from species to species. Birds like hoopoes, sparrows and starlings will readily nest in boxes with holes as entrances because they would naturally nest in crevices or hollow trees. The size of the entrance hole is important, depending on which species you would like to attract.

Birds like robins and wagtails will nest in boxes with an open front because they would naturally nest in hedges or more open situations.

Some bird species will not use birdhouses or nest boxes. You can still attract them to your garden however by putting up bird feeders and providing water. You may even want to plant certain trees and flowers.

THE BIRDHOUSE 'KIT' CONCEPT

Our kits provide a quality children’s craft - but are equally appropriate for keen adult birders too!  They are perfect for scout / school projects, and make a unique gift for all ages.

Solid pine sections, machine cut for accuracy, make up each birdhouse.  We also supply the required screws and nails - and a perch (Diamond and Rectangular boxes only).

All that is needed for assembly is a screwdriver and a hammer.  Easy to follow instructions are provided.
