WHERE TO PUT YOUR BIRDHOUSE / NEST BOX

The positioning of your birdhouse is very important.  It should never be in the direct sun as the heat could kill the nestlings.  If possible place it in a southerly direction - definitely not north.   Take into account the direction of the prevailing wind so that rain doesn’t enter and flood the box.

There should be enough space around the birdhouse so that birds have a clear flight path into the box.   Open boxes however require more cover and some birds, such as robins, prefer a low nest site.  By siting them a little hidden from view, near climbing plants and other vegetation, you will be providing young birds with both physical support and good cover as they learn to fly.

Avoid putting birdhouses attracting the same species too close together as this could cause agitation and aggressive behaviour.  They should be positioned a good distance away from bird tables or bird feeders as a flock of feeding birds will disturb potential breeding pairs.

While some boxes may be occupied immediately, others may remain vacant, often for no apparent reason.  If a box is not used for several years it may be worth relocating it.
